Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
A priest, a Communist and a (former) member of the Résistance walk into a confessional: while Matt’s currently enjoying a series of films by Jean-Pierre Melville, he especially enjoyed that Léon Morin, Priest was something of an odd one out, seeing how it focuses on a female protagonist.
Meanwhile, in this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees Alan wrote about the often-retold Dark Phoenix Saga, one of the staples of the X-Men – and how it only ever seems to be adapted into bad movie versions.
And Alan and Matt were joined by Sam in the June espresso podcast episode, in which they discussed whether they were looking forward to the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and how they felt about the series as a whole. (Spoiler: Differently from everyone else, they seem to like Raiders and Last Crusade best. Who’d have thunk?)
But let’s see what else this week’s trailer post has in store!
Mege: I say, open that box and let the slithering snakes of the past come out. It makes for good entertainment. Ninety minutes of scary shit is sometimes exactly what the doctor ordered. Weird doctor, huh?
Matt: They Cloned Tyrone looks interesting in some respects: it seems to mix sci fi, Afro-Surrealism and Blaxploitation in ways that might be fun, and it stars Jon Boyega and Teyonah Parris. At the same time: Netflix hasn’t exactly been brilliant at producing particularly good films over the last few years – and the writers were among the many people working on the script for Space Jam: A New Legacy. I hope this will be good, but I’m definitely waiting to read a few reviews before watching it.
