I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: Lights! Cameras! Tricksters!

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

This week saw the first instalment in a new series – after his trip through Ingmar Bergman’s oeuvre, Matt has begun watching Criterion’s Federico Fellini box set, starting with Variety Lights. Sadly, there’s no trailer for the film on YouTube… but here’s the next best thing: the entire movie. Enjoy!

Even more sadly, there’s no trailer to be found on YouTube for the BBC series of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (Matt wrote about his memories of reading the novel for this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees), but the title sequence – and its use of the Eagles’ “Journey of the Sorcerer” – certainly brings back memories.

Meanwhile, we released the third instalment in our summer series, the Summer of Collaborations, in which (again) Matt talks to Alan and Sam about the films of Joel and Ethan Coen and their frequent collaborators Frances McDormand and Carter Burwell.

Which brings us to our regular trailers for the week.

Mege: I am university-trained, but I never had to go through this here. Looks a bit like Whiplash before its time, doesn’t it? What do you soak up from a prickly and almost hostile tutor?

Matt: The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s TV output has been uneven, to put it kindly, but while I think it was far from perfect, the first season of Loki was one of the most consistently enjoyable entries. Will Season 2 bring back the goodwill that was lost with the most recent MCU series, Secret Invasion? Or are even Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson not quite enough to right the ship?
