I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: Nun of the above

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

Earlier this week, Matt indulged in his enjoyment of badass nuns, writing about the goofy, strange, inventive Mrs. Davis.

Staying with the strange and goofy, Mege (re-)visited Barbie for this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees. And while we’re at it, don’t forget the August espresso podcast, in which Matt and Alan went full Barbenheimer!)

But there’s more out there than nuns in pursuit of the Holy Grail and plastic men with a troubling thingfor horses.

Mege: Oh look, it’s the new True Detective. Well, maybe it isn’t, because slithery teflon types like Justin Timberlake don’t fit into crime county. But there is Benicio del Toro as the tired cop, so some of the grit is back in.

Matt: It’s difficult to get a feel for what Foe sets out to be, which may be part of the point. The upcoming sci-fi film directed by Garth Davis and starring Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan (now there are two good reasons to be interested in Foe!) is based on a novel by Iain Reid, who also wrote I’m Thinking of Ending Things – and that one was an unsettlingly perfect fit for Charlie Kaufman’s particular talents. I’m definitely curious how this one will turn out, but I’m hoping that the film as a whole will have a better handle on what I expect will be a slippery, challenging story and characters than the trailer suggests.
