I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: All sorts of murder

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

Looking for the sexy in “sexy thriller”? Look no further than La Piscine, the hot and sweaty Alain Delon/Romy Schneider classic that Matt recently checked out in his endeavours to tackle his Criterion Collection backlog.

Meanwhile, Julie went even further back in time, to a dark day in the late 1960s, in this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees – though trust Quentin Tarantino to rewrite history!

Also, we finished this year’s summer podcast series, the Summer of Collaborations, with one of the most iconic creative partnerships that Hollywood has brought us: Steven Spielberg and John Williams. (We’re skipping the Indiana Jones trailer because those featured after our June and July espresso podcasts.)

But there’ve also been some other interesting trailers recently.

Mege: Whoever made that trailer didn’t do Fincher’s latest offering any favours. Repeating a killer’s mantra sounds generic and makes The Killer look like any other crime noir flick. But it’s not – it’s Fincher.

Matt: Sandra Hüller has an amazing range, and she’s been eminently watchable in everything I’ve seen her in. International audiences probably know her best from Toni Erdmann, but festival buzz suggests that we’ve got two great performances to look forward to with Anatomy of a Fall and Jonathan Glazer’s forthcoming The Zone of Interest. Both look and sound intriguing – but I’m hoping we’ll also get to see Hüller flex her comedic muscles again before long.
