I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: Striking fear into our hearts, 24 frames per second

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

The French have a knack for uncanny goings-on in remote rural villages – though Matt was not entirely sold on The Five Devils, in spite of some very strong performances.

But hey, there are always worse films dealing with the supernatural and the scary, as Sam’s revisit of The Exorcist II revealed!

And staying with the scary theme, let’s move on to…

Mege: So let’s see, we’ve got most of the cast of The Haunting of Hill House, lots of blood, characters that turn out to be… not exactly human, signs of doom and death, and rain, thunder and lightning. And the story is by Edgar Allan Poe, that cheerful fella with not a Gothic bone in his body.

Matt: I missed most of Hayao Miyazaki‘s films at the cinema. Come to think of it, I think I’ve only seen Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away on the big screen. I was too late for his earlier classics (god, I’d love to see Porco Rosso on a proper movie screen!), and several of them never got a big release in Switzerland – so I’m very much hoping that Miyazaki’s latest last film will get the big release here that its creator more than deserves.

And finally: two big upcoming releases, sci-fi epic The Creator and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, got their final trailers recently. Both look to scratch very different itches, but I’m excited for both.
