Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
Norman Bates is back! Well, not exactly – but for this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees, Matt wrote about his positive but patchy memories of Psycho II, and the reasons why he doesn’t particularly want to go back and find out whether the film was really surprisingly good or whether at the time it just benefited from really low expectations (and Meg Tilly, obviously).
This week we also released the September espresso podcast, in which Sam talked about his weird and wonderful LA summer holiday – which featured a surprise run-in with Michael Douglas, in whose honour we’re posting the following trailer.
And what else does this week have in store, trailer-wise?
Matt: I’ve only seen Andrew Haigh’s 45 Years, a subtle, supremely well-acted drama with Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay. I’ve not seen his Weekend, which I’ve heard very good things about. All of Us Strangers seems to return to Haigh’s first critical darling in some ways, focusing on a tentative romance between two men, but it seems there’s also a distinctly uncanny streak running through it. I’m definitely there for the cast already, especially for Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal, who have both shown what they can do with strong scripts.
Matt: And to end this week’s trailer post: remember him? I’m not a huge Doctor Who fan (we do have one on the team, but I’m not outing anyone this Sunday evening), but I’ve enjoyed some of the series, especially the ones in which the Doctor was played by one Scottish actor or another. After the mixed reactions to the Jodie Whittaker/Chris Chibnall years – which were flawed but at the same time were often criticised for things that were entirely beside the point – bringing back David Tennant to lead the 60th Anniversary specials does seem like pretty heavy-handed fan service… but I’d be lying if I said that this doesn’t look like fun.
