I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: Cinema, red in (dog)tooth and (finger)nail

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

Last week saw us looking back – or squinting, more likely – at Psycho II, so this week Alan took us back to the Anthony Perkins-directed Psycho III, a sequel that isn’t as bad as you’d expect… but does that make it a good film? Read this Friday’s Six Damn Fine Degrees to find out!

If you’re more in the mood for mooks and dames, Tommy guns and some of the sharpest writing this side of Prohibition-era America, you may want to check out Matt’s most recent foray into his Criterion backlog. In brief: Miller’s Crossing is still a tremendously enjoyable Coen brothers treat.

And what else does this week’s trailer post have in store for us?

Matt: Christos Nikou’s Apples was flawed but interesting Lanthimos-lite. His follow-up, Fingernails, looks like it’s heading in the same direction, just with more English-language star power. Now, I definitely like me some Riz Ahmed and Jessie Buckley – but there’s something about the trailer that rubs me the wrong way. It just feels too self-consciously off-beat but trying very hard to be poignant underneath the mild surrealism. Here’s hoping that it’s simply not all that well served by the trailer.

And finally:

Matt: Here’s a new trailer for a show we’ve featured before: the upcoming True Detective: Night Country. This one doesn’t exactly look like it’s got a single original bone in its body, but it also looks like it could pull off a potent genre piece, and if the blend of inspirations is just right and handled well, why not? Plus, it’s got Fiona Shaw, and you have to work hard to make her not enjoyable.
