Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
Halloween is still a few weeks away, but October’s a good month for scary films. Are long-running franchises that basically repeat the same basic story over and over again really scary, though? Matt has some doubts in this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees.
Keeping with the scary movie theme, Sam, Julie and Matt talked about all things Dracula for the October podcast episode.
But it’s not all scary fun and games for this week’s trailer post.
Mege: Barbie comes to mind here – and Priscilla is a real person. She is much more interesting than the king himself. I am pretty confident that Coppola has a sure take on her. Movies about women in the shadow of famous men are best directed by women. There, I’ve said it.
Matt: From the trailer, I can’t really say whether Silent Night is supposed to be grim or goofy – or both. There’s the whole kid-killing thing, but then there’s also Joel Kinnaman making his way towards the camera with a deranged look of determination… and Rudolf’s big red nose on his sweater bobbing like mad. Is John Woo making a revenge action flick or a parody of revenge action flicks? Or is he just looking for an opportunity to go full Woo?
