Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
Once you’re caught in the Herzog Maelstrom, it’s very difficult to get away from it – just ask Julie, who dedicated this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees to one of the most famous pairs of frenemies in cinema.
Meanwhile, Matt continued his trip through his Criterion backlog with Peter Boganovich’s first feature film, Targets.
And what else is happening in the world of trailers?
Mege: Is that some Thelma & Louise for a younger audience? Either way, I belong to a smallish group who likes to see Kristen Stewart on screen. And I have an odd inexplicable crush on Ed Harris, so there. And the movie is A24, which these days is a sign of quality.
Matt: Okay, sometimes A24 also gets it wrong – or at least that’s the impression I get from the trailer for Tuesday. I’m fine with magic realism, but this drama in which Death takes on the form of a talking macaw looks absolutely dreadful, like one of those parody trailers at the beginning of Tropic Thunder or made for Grindhouse, the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez double bill. The utter earnestness of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ performance (which looks like it could be really good in a different film) makes it even more difficult to take this seriously. But hey, perhaps I’m in a minority here, because a lot of the online discussion is by people who are already close to tears just on the basis of this trailer.
