I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: These dead are made for walkin’

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

Over the last few weeks, our Six Damn Fine Degrees took us from Herzog to Kinski – but we may not have ended up with the Kinski you’d expect, in Sam’s most recent post!

Tess’ fate in Thomas Hardy’s novel Tess of the Durbervilles (and Roman Polanski’s adaptation) is characteristically dire – but not all young women fare as badly as her: Bella Baxter, the oddball heroine of Yorgos Lanthimos’ much-praised Poor Things (incidentally also an adaptation of a novel), ends up in a much better place than one might expect from a protagonist in a Lanthimos film. Which, going from Lanthimos’ filmography, isn’t necessarily saying much.

And what else do this week’s trailers have in store for us?

Mege: Yeah, look, it‘s time that they send this one to bed. It‘s surprising that they squeezed some interesting storylines out of it, but like House MD, it has grown repetitive somewhere along the line. Enough slouching and groaning. One more last stand, and then the dead stay dead. The rest gets to live. Done.

Matt: What the hell is Cate Blanchett doing in this? It’s not just that it looks trashy – I’m sure that making trashy films can be fun. But it looks dumb, and not in a fun way. In fact, this looks so dumb, it makes the original video games look positively smart by comparison.
