Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
Our Fellini series continued this week with Matt’s post on 8 1/2: a film that is likely to evoke strong reactions, both for the filmmaking and for the way in which it does arguably indulge its man-child Fellini stand-in protagonist, even when it’s mocking him.
On Friday, Mege looked back at Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 album Nebraska and drew a link to Paddy Considine’s Tyrannosaur and its raw, memorable central performances.
And that takes us to the week’s other trailers.
Matt: The trailer for Fancy Dance doesn’t necessarily win me over, but Lily Gladstone definitely makes me look up and take notice – not even so much because of Killers of the Flower Moon, though I liked that one a lot, but mostly because of her fantastic performance in Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women. And Shea Whigham is a nice bonus to boot.
Matt: I remember Orphan Black being quite the hit in geek circles back when it came out, and I enjoyed what I saw of it well enough – but the superlative praise I heard a lot of at the time put me off, because while Tatiana Maslany’s performance was great fun, the series felt too much like a hodgepodge of other, better stories designed by committee: how to push your target audience’s buttons. I stopped watching at some point after the second season. Not sure that Orphan Black: Echoes has enough to pull me back in – but you could definitely do worse than casting Krysten Ritter and Keeley Hawes as two of your leads.
