Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
This week, on A Damn Fine Cup of Culture, Matt wrote about what happens when three girls vanish during a school outing, in Peter Weir’s Picnic at Hanging Rock.
Meanwhile, on Friday, Julie dedicated her latest Six Damn Fine Degrees entry to the most wonderful Thelma Ritter, so here are two trailers for some of her less well-known films (one of which, Pickup on South Street, can be watched in its entirety on YouTube).
From one of the great eternal supporting actresses to one of Netflix’ latest original films…
Mege: I am not sure if a ‘one man against a corrupt town‘ story is Jeremy Saulnier‘s forte. He is very good at evoking an atmosphere of dread and imminent violence. Here, he adds a dash of John Rambo, which is a step back for him.
Matt: This trailer for The Room Next Door makes me wonder if the film, Pedro Almodóvar’s first feature-length film in English, is his entry into the trite “Estranged mother and daughter finally grow closer to one another because one of them is dying” canon. If it is, though, the trailer suggests that Almodóvar and his fantastic cast will wring something new and unexpected from the material. If anyone can, it’s surely Almodóvar, Swinton and Moore.
