I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: You gotta know when to hold, know when to fold

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

Our Summer of Remakes podcast series ended at the beginning of the month, but Sam – whose idea the series theme was – had some thoughts looking back. So let’s start this week’s trailer -out not with a trailer but with what appears to be the first remake ever: Georges Méliès’ “Playing Cards”.

Sam was also responsible for this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees, in which he wrote about the strange strategies behind his parents’ control of his media consumption as a child. Would you have expected Visconti’s The Damned to feature?

And what else is there in this week’s trailer grab bag?

Mege: It was really only a question of time until this one got its remake, right? I liked Midnight Mass except for its silly ending, and I loved The Haunting of Hill House, and I‘ll watch anything with Bill Camp in it. I like that old style horror with haunted houses and villages with secrets, and the nights are getting longer and darker around here, and people rub their wind-chafed eyes until they‘re red.

Matt: Watership Down is one of those films that I wish I’d seen when I was much younger. When I did see it for the first time, perhaps ten years ago, I was intrigued by its darkness and earnestness, but I’d been hearing and reading about other people’s traumatic experience seeing this one as a kid, and that’s not really something you can replicate if you first see the film in your 30s. It’s a welcome reminder, though, that Western animation doesn’t just have to be for kids, you know?
