I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it a kaiju?

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

Only a few more days until Christmas – but until the big Yuletide onslaught begins in earnest, let’s revisit what we did this week at A Damn Fine Cup of Culture… starting with Sam’s revisiting of two pastiches of classic crime stories, Clue and Murder by Death.

Also this week: Matt ticked another classic off of his Criterion list – an iconic Japanese film of truly gargantuan proportions, if you catch our drift.

But let’s finish with two trailers that couldn’t be more different in terms of tone, yet they both are for stories – one in animated TV format, one made for the big screen – that come from the same creative mind: James Gunn.

Matt: I’ve never much been into DC comics, and I’ve definitely never been a Superman guy – but I’m still curious to see what James Gunn will do with the Man of Steel. From the first teaser trailer, he definitely seems to move in the opposite direction of Zach Snyder’s grimdarkery, and while I’m not necessarily sold on super dogs with capes, I do like the idea of doing something much more earnest and in keeping with Christopher Reeves’ Superman. But at the same time I’m glad that Gunn is still happy to do the kind of goofy, OTT cartoon mayhem that he’s shown he can do so well. Creature Commandos looks like a blast – though admittedly the kind of blast that feels rather familiar to Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and his work on Guardians of the Galaxy.
