I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

There are few cartoon shorts better than the Merrie Melodies classic Duck Amuckwhich is why Matt dedicated this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees to it.

Matt also revisited the classic The Elephant Man shortly after the recent news of David Lynch’s death, finding a film that, while more approachable than many of Lynch’s films, still very much carries the director’s DNA.

And what else do we have for you in this week’s trailer post?

Mege: There is a blatant McGuffin right in front of you in Companion, and if I can figure it out in first minute, so can you. This is an okay-to-medium slasher flick, entertaining, but not for the ages. It has a few good ideas that last for two minutes, but then the movie is pretty much on autopilot again. Sophie Thatcher and Harvey Guillén are inspired casting choices, but Jack Quaid was going on my nerves after fifteen minutes. And Rupert Friend is unrecognizable.

Matt: There are some trailers that I might like the first one or two times I see them, but then they quickly begin to grate. On Becoming a Guinea Fowl isn’t one of those: I’ve now seen it about eight or nine times, and I enjoy it every time. Much like Rungano Nyoni’s first feature film I Am Not a Witch, this seems to be a fascinating blend of drama, surrealism and dark, deadpan humour. Very much looking forward to the film itself later this month.
