I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: Domo arigato, Swiss Miss

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

What’s the kids’ TV we grew up with? For Matt, who grew up in Switzerland, it was a surprising number of TV series based on European children’s books but made in Japan. (Okay, this is not a trailer so much as it is the title sequence of Heidi, Girl of the Alps in the Japanese original, I know, but what can you do.)

Matt also took another trip down Criterion lane, finally watching Something Wild in its entirety.

And here’s one more trailer for this week – okay, if we’re precise about it, it’s this week’s only actual trailer.

Matt: MobLand looks fun, and that cast is pure chef’s kiss, but it also looks like pretty every other thing Guy Richie has ever done. But is that a fair assessment? People seek out, say, Elmore Leonard’s novels for their Elmore Leonard-ness – so why shouldn’t it be justified for Richie to work on what he does best, as long as he does it well? Then again, the Leonard adaptations I’ve seen don’t make it seem like he basically told the same story using the same characters over and over. (Okay, to be accurate: while Ritchie is one of the Executive Producers of MobLand and is directing some of the episodes, it’s not a Ritchie-only affair, even if the trailer does stress his name the most.)
