I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: Domo arigato, Mr Roboto

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

This week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees was the kind of post that wouldn’t even need a byline: it’s immediately clear that this post about Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights is one of Julie’s.

Just like it’s pretty obvious that the Saturday post on the recentish video game Aliens: Dark Descent, and more generally about movie tie-in video games, had to have been written by Matt.

But what other trailers are waiting for you this week?

Matt: The Netflix series of animated shorts Love Death + Robots has always been a showcase of strong animation, but the stories have been a mixed bunch. More than anything, the series’ adolescent insistence on T&A has often undermined the storytelling – but when the previous four seasons were firing on all cylinders, they were well worth checking out. The teaser for the fourth season makes it look very much like what came before: great craftsmanship marred by a tiresomely adolescent mindset, because boobiezamirite???

The first trailer for The Phoenician Scheme, Wes Anderson’s new film, also looks like nothing new. Honestly, has there ever been a trailer that looked as Wes Anderson as this one? Not since the last Wes Anderson trailer. I always come away from these thinking that it’s finally happened: Anderson has become a parody of himself. But I distinctly remember thinking this very thing when the trailer for Asteroid City came out – and that one ended up being my favourite film by the director in years, and it wasn’t even close.
