I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: If Tom Cruise is 62 years old, how old does that make me?

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

Being a parent isn’t just about introducing your kids to all the books, films and series you loved when you were their age: in this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees, Melanie wrote about the weird and wonderful shows her (by now 14-year-old) daughter has introduced her.

Meanwhile, Matt’s Criterion odyssey has taken him to the film with that scene where a young Tom Cruise dances to “Old Time Rock and Roll” in his undies: Risky Business.

And what else do we have in our trailer bag this week?

Matt: Sequels, sidequels and reboots: is there anything new and fresh coming to cinemas these days? But while I Know What You Did Last Summer looks like the very definition of ‘more of the same’, Predator: Badlands at least tells what looks like a new story, and Dan Trachtenberg’s previous instalment in the Predator series, Prey, arguably was the best film about the alien big-game hunters since the Arnie-rific original. It’s also nice that, as with Prey, not all of these films have to be about big dudes with big guns. And 28 Years Later looks much more fascinating to me than a third part in a horror series has any right to look. Part of it is the foreboding use of Rudyard Kipling’s open “Boots”, part of it is the sense I get that, at least aesthetically, this one takes a page out of the big book of folk horror.
