Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
It’s not for the faint of heart, as Julie writes in this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees entry, but Nicholas Windig Refn’s Bronson is worth a revisit.
Also worth a visit, at least according to Matt, is Steven Soderbergh’s surprisingly sexy paean of marital fidelity wrapped up in a spy thriller, Black Bag.
And what else is there in this week’s grab bag of trailers?
Matt: Disney’s 2016 animated comedy Zootopia was a blast, with a lot of fun jokes (the sloths!) and a great cast. Not that I’ve been counting the days until there was a sequel – but I very much enjoyed this teaser, which doesn’t show all the best gags from the full film itself but instead is a stylish, fun short in its own right. Definitely looks like one to catch once it’s on Disney Plus.
Matt: This is an odd one that just popped up on my YouTube feed. I’m usually not a big fan of trashy, cheesy films, which this one definitely seems to be – but there’s a sense that The Stuff, for all its B-movie shenanigans, is more knowing than many of its ilk, but not in a glibly postmodern pastiche-y way. And, hey, it’s got Danny Aiello and Paul Sorvino in it – two great actors that strangely never appeared in the same movie other than this one. Honestly, it looks like you could do worse if you’re in the market for a sci-fi horror satire. After all, can you go wrong with a film that’s got the line: “Are you eating it, or is it eating you?”
