Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
Straight from Little Rock, this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees has Julie talk about what she had instead of Disney princesses: Marilyn Monroe’s Lorelei and Jane Russell’s Dorothy.
Meanwhile, our July espresso podcast stays with the topic of David Lynch: Sam and Alan talk Wild at Heart.
And what else is there in our Sunday trailer grab bag?
Matt: This one could be interesting – or dreadful. Or both. The trailer looks a bit like a present-day take on material such as David Mamet’s Oleanna. It could be dreadful, reactionary garbage dressed up to look smart and provocative and incisive, but it all depends on how well it’s executed. Luca Guadagnino is sure to make this look great – but let’s see what else the film turns out to be.
Matt: Agnieszka Holland is one to watch out for: her films, even when they address historical subjects, are highly political and very much about the present day. Her last film Green Border was a sharply angry, deeply human piece about migrants caught in the hellish no man’s land between Belarus and the European Union. This one, a biopic about writer Franz Kafka, doesn’t seem to have the same political edge – but I trust Holland not to make yet another standard biography. Especially if it’s about Kafka.
