Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
This week, we launched our new monthly feature: Shortcuts. Once a month, we will post quick write-ups about what the gang at A Damn Fine Cup has been watching, reading, listening to or playing. Our first Shortcuts took us from the poetic Silent Friend to the “chemistry and crass jokes up the wazoo” of goofball superhero game Dispatch.
Meanwhile, Melanie found herself in a time loop for this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees, with the Chinese TV series Reset.
But wait, there’s more!
Mege: Why is this trailer so disquieting? Is it because that family has, by and large, the same happy moments and everyday problems as anyone else? What did I miss? Why do I need to be assured that it‘s okay if I go and see another film instead of this one? Is it some kind of low-key horror film, with all its ghosts right there in front of us?
Matt: I haven’t quite finished the first season of Daredevil: Born Again, but I was pretty much certain that I’d be jumping off the Daredevil train once it pulls in at the station: Born Again felt messy and dour, and in the end few of the characters were particularly enjoyable or interesting to watch. And then the teaser for season 2 came out and, in the words of Michael Corleone, they pulled me back in: Jessica Jones strikes me as just the right antidote to the dull, repetitive grimness of too much of the first season. Here’s hoping she’s more than just a cameo for one or two episodes, because that’ll make me truly resent the series – because, at least for me, this version of Matt Murdoch doesn’t really work if he’s not surrounded by characters I actually want to spend some time with.
