Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
Everybody’s talkin’ about our post on Midnight Cowboy– okay, not really, but still, if you missed it, go and check our the lastest Criterion Corner, about John Schlesinger’s late ’60s classic.
On Saturday – AKA the Second Friday – Mege wrote about the watery weirdness of many of Christian Petzold’s films. We’ve recently features a trailer for Petzold’s latest, Afire, so here’s one instead for his Transit, which also stars Paula Beer and is well worth revisiting, or indeed visiting for the first time.
And with this we’re moving on to our regular trailers for the week.
Mege: Oh please, let it have that Elmore Leonard vibe, otherwise we are relegated to chasing his ghost. If they make a miniseries out of one of the best series of recent years, it better delivers its goods, or we end up with True Detective season 2.
Matt: It’s difficult to say what intrigues me more about this: the wonderfully off-kilter performances, both by veterans and newcomers to Lanthimos’ universe; the hybrid animal mashups that make Doctor Moreau look like a rank amateur; the deadpan goofiness of the lines; or the visual inventiveness that, at least in this form, seems a new thing in a Lanthimos movie. This may just be the upcoming film I’m looking forward to most. September can’t come soon enough.
