I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: The common denominator of filmmaking is not harmony

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

This week, Matt wrote about less-than-ideal actor/director relationships – mentioning along the way one of the most iconic fraught relationships in cinema, so let’s give the word to Messrs Kinski and Herzog.

Matt also posted a piece about his special fondness for stop-motion animation, in which he brought up the recent claymation memoir No Dogs or Italians Allowed.

But let’s give the word to someone other than Matt, at least briefly.

Mege: Aww heck, that had to happen sooner or later. Why isn’t a botched kidnapping more of a movie trope? There is suspense, drama and comedy all in one. And of course, everyone is so damn quirky. Looking forward to the woodchipper, folks.

Matt: I liked both Band of Brothers and The Pacific a lot. The former blended the pathos of heroic men doing heroic things with much more small-scale, human moments, doing a great job of telling a very traditional sort of story very well. I wouldn’t necessarily say that I liked The Pacific better, but I would say it’s the more surprising of the two series, especially in how it has more to say about trauma and the ways war can damage people without physical wounds. I’m curious to see what Masters of the Air by many of the same creative heads does – but while the trailer for the upcoming Apple TV+ series looks very well crafted, my first impression is that they went back to Band of Brothers and then beyond it in showing us derring-do heroism in WW2 garb. I very much hope there’s more to the upcoming series than this.
