Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
Many of Criterion’s releases are the classics of Hollywood and world cinema that all film geeks have heard of: Fellini, Bergman, Varda. Or then it’s cult classics such as the original Godzilla films. Some of their releases are less known, though, such as Diamonds of the Night, which Matt discovered recently.
There are some great Agatha Christie adaptations for the screen, both big and small. Sadly, Alan argues in this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees, ITV’s Marple isn’t one of them.
And what other trailers are trailering this week?
Mege: This may just be one of this year’s most solid courtroom dramas. Has Clint Eastwood ever made something half-baked? And the twist does not seem over the top, although it might be that from a lesser director.
Matt: The early buzz for Babygirl is great – especially if you’re looking for Hollywood films that don’t consider sex to be a dirty word (or you think it’s exactly the right kind of dirty). Nicole Kidman isn’t my favourite actor, but she’s reliably good, and I hear great things about her in this one. However, what stood out to me wasn’t Kidman and the games she enters into with her young subordinate (who may be less sub than the word suggests), but the snippets of the score, which immediately made me listen. And, indeed, the music is by Cristobal Tapia de Veer, whose scores for Utopia and The White Lotus were highly recognisable and a huge part of what those two series feel like.
