I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: I call this one Bitey!

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

This week saw the first Six Damn Fine Degrees post by a new contributor: Doctor John Smith (now why does that name ring a bell?) wrote about movie vampires and their ties to the aristocracy and to capitalism. After all, they do like to bleed us dry, don’t they?

Meanwhile, Matt continued with his Tour de Fellini, following Satyricon with the director’s strange, beguiling semi-autobiographical drama/satire/documentary Roma.

And what else is there in this week’s trailer bag?

Matt: Not sure I like the first teaser for the last (?) Mission: Impossible film all that much. There’s a sense of pompous self-importance that simply doesn’t work with what the series does best: great physical action. But perhaps that sense of weight comes with the sense that we might see the end of Tom Cruise, Action Hero before long? After all, Mr Cruise is 62 years old. And if that isn’t an indication that we’re all getting old, what is?

Matt: And talking of getting old: I’ve heard mixed things about Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron as a piece of filmmaking, but as a document of one of the most wonderful artists in the medium of animation and the ups and downs of his creative process it may be hard to beat. I don’t expect the film to come to cinemas near me any time soon, but the moment it’s out on streaming, I’ll be all over it.
