Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
This week, Alan wrote about his childhood love for Greg Bear’s novel Blood Music – which makes for a great Six Damn Fine Degrees post, but sadly, it makes the whole issue of finding a trailer difficult, since Bear’s writings had never been turned into films or TV series. However, YouTube does have a reading of the original short story that Bear expanded into the novel, so if you need one hour of audio while you’re cooking or doing the dishes, why not check this out?
Also this week: Matt filled the last major gap in the Criterion box set Essential Fellini. Ginger and Fred isn’t essential, but there are still things to be found in it that are well worth checking out.
And what else do we have for you this week?
Matt: Not sure the trailer sells this one completely – but that critic quote definitely does: The Scottish samurai movie you never knew you needed.” This looks scrappy and rough around the edges in ways that I can totally see working – plus, I definitely buy Tim Roth and Jack Lowden as a psychotic father/son pairing. Putting the hai back in the “hai”lands? … I am sorry. I am so very, very sorry.
Matt: And finally: I never much enjoyed the Mel Brooks films I’ve seen (though I’ve never seen Blazing Saddles), and that includes Spaceballs, though others I grew up with loved this Star Wars sendup. I like what this teaser does with the format, though… and there have been a lot of these movies, haven’t there?
