I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: No animal, but definitely mineral and vegetable

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

In this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees, Sam stopped by to check out the storied, colourful career of Roger Corman: producer, director, writer, actor, and the man who boosted the careers of the likes of Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, Joe Dante and James Cameron.

Meanwhile, Matt reported on the goings-on in 1977 Brazil, as related by writer-director Kleber Mendonça Filho in this year’s international hit The Secret Agent.

And what other trailers have we got for you this week?

Matt: We’ve posted teasers and trailers for Wake Up Dead Man before, but since the release of the film is upon us, here’s the official Netflix trailer. This looks like a blast – but it also makes me sad that Rian Johnson’s Poker Face (which very much feels like it belongs in the same fictional universe as Knives Out and its follow-ups) was recently cancelled. Then again, Johnson’s trying to continue it elsewhere, albeit with a different lead: Peter Dinklage swapping in for Natasha Lyonne, but still playing the same character. It sounds crazy enough to work, even if I hope that Lyonne would be down for this. More fictional characters should get the Doctor Who regeneration treatment.

Matt: A 4K re-release of The Apartment sounds like as good an opportunity as any to revisit Billy Wilder’s wonderful classic. (Yes, I’m an Apartment guy, not a Some Like It Hot guy. Nobody’s perfect.) And, of course, it’s a perfect opportunity to link to our recent Second Chances podcast episode focusing on Shirley MacLaine. Don’t like it? Shut up and deal.

Matt: And, finally, it looks like we can look forward to some sweet sci-fi early next year that’s funny, heartfelt and hopefully smart in equal measures. With a cast like this (I like Gosling, but I’m especially excited to see Sandra Hüller in an English-language movie), another adaptation of a Andy Weir novel by Drew Goddard (which worked beautifully for The Martian) and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller in the directors’ chair, I’ll definitely be there.
