Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
There are cities that were practically created to be on film: think London, think Paris, think New York. And definitely think Berlin, as Sam convincingly argues in this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees.
Sam also features in our February espresso, together with Matt: the two of them took this month’s podcast on Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead as an opportunity to talk about the stage, the screen, and the relationship between the two art forms.
But let’s change the scenery for our regular trailers of the week.
Mege: Life is so bleak that it feels black and white. She has to dress as a man, there is a war on, and that maid she has to live with is too intense. Life does not go on like that for much longer.
Matt: Watching the trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu, I’m torn. Part of me thinks that there’s little here that we haven’t already seen in several seasons of the streaming series (except for Sigourney Weaver, and she obviously goes a long way). At the same time, I like the idea of a small, pulpy adventure of the kind that inspired Star Wars in the first place. I’m not sure I’ll be running to cinemas for this one, but at the latest once it’s on Disney+, I will gladly get in a pizza and check out what Din Djarin and Grogu are getting up to these days. They’ll never top the excitement of that first trailer, and of Werner Herzog’s unmistakable voice, though: “Bounty hunting is a complicated profession.” You tell them, Werner.
