I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: The Hole Truth

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

Last week was the end of February, which means that Wednesday was Shortcuts day, featuring quick takes by the gang about what they’ve been watching, reading and listening to recently.

Then, on Friday, Matt took us to a city that is really two cities – or even three? – with China Miéville’s The City & The City.

And what else is there in this week’s trailer grab bag?

Mege: Ian McKellen, Michaela Coel, Steven Soderbergh. Are you hooked yet? If you don‘t feel that familiar cineastic pull at the base of your stomach, then you need to listen to this blog more often. I have a soft spot for forgers and those who transgress the rules, and Coel and McKellen are such an interesting coupling.

Matt: “Mister police. You could have saved her. I gave you all the clues.” It should have been great: Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, the director and one of the screenwriters of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and all of it based on a successful Scandi Noir novel. Instead, The Snowman was perhaps the cinematic laughing stock of 2017. It probably didn’t help, at least in the culturally solipsistic English-speaking world that Jo Nesbø’s detective is called Harry Hole – pronounced “Hoh-leh”, but that didn’t stop any of the sniggering. Well, Detective Hole is back, with a Netflix series, and this time in Norwegian, which might help. Oh, and if you’ve ever wondered what Joel Kinnaman sounds like when he’s not doing a Southern US accent, this is your chance. In case you’re wondering: no, he’s not playing Harry.
