Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
This week, Sam reminisced about the animated line art of his childhood – or, more precisely, he wrote about his memories of the Italian cartoon La Linea, which featured a little man made up of a single line and his ongoing fight against the vicissitudes of life… and the whims of his animator. No trailer this time; instead you’re getting an entire La Linea cartoon (and the accompanying doo-bee-doo 1970s soundtrack), courtesy of YouTube.
We also released our February podcast, another instalment in our annual Second Chances series. This time, Alan and Sam talked about two films starring Shirley MacLaine that they originally didn’t much enjoy: the Hitchcock oddity The Trouble with Harry and Billy Wilder’s The Apartment. How did the films fare in being revisited?
We’re going to finish this week’s trailer post with a film we’ve featured before, but the second trailer does shine a more extensive light on the movie:
Matt: I’m still worried that, as in Okja, I won’t find Bong Joon Ho’s silly side quite as engaging in an English-language film, but the second trailer makes Mickey 17 look more like a film I’ll want to see at the cinema. There are echoes of other films and series in this, from Duncan Jones’ Moon to the Apple+ series Severance (which has just entered its second season), but the grungy-but-goofy sci-fi vibe of this is quite unique. Also, in March the Academy Awards craziness will hopefully be over and we will once again be able to focus on the films themselves – so: bring it on, all you Mickeys.
