Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
In this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees: more books (Melanie wrote about making her way through Lois McMaster Bujold’s Vorkosigan Saga), so even less of an opportunity to post a fitting trailer! So, if it’s not too much of an insult to fans of the saga, here’s a trailer for the third season of a different sci-fi saga: Apple TV’s adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation. Obviously we need more adaptations of long-form sci-fi!
Meanwhile, we also released the June espresso episode, which picks up where we left off with our recent episode on David Lynch: Sam and Matt discuss deleted scenes, focusing on the almost legendary sets of deleted scenes available for Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me – which, predictably, have been used to create fan edits of the two films.
And what else do we have in this week’s trailer grab bag?
Matt: ParaNorman is coming back to cinemas! I love the stop-motion films of LAIKA, and stop motion in general, and ParaNorman is a beautiful example of their craft. Chances are it won’t make it to cinemas in where I live, or just in a dubbed version, but I’m still happy that this early LAIKA gem gets another go at the big screen. Very much looking forward to their Wildwood, which should be released next year.
Matt: And, finally, this. There are some films I’d honestly rather watch at home, with pizza and possibly some alcohol, and if I will ever watch The Toxic Avenger, it’ll be on the sofa, pizza and a drink at hand. Movies such as this walk a fine line: they can be a riot, or they can be a cynical, artless exercise in ticking boxes on a sheet marked “I desperately want to be a cult movie”. They’ve got a good cast, though – and Macon Blair, who’s made some very interesting films. He’s not a frequent director, but hey, happy to see what he comes up with… as long as I can enjoy it with a pizza and a drink, that is.
I’m looking forward to Foundation S3. Such a great show.
Have you also read the books? How does the series compare?
No, I have stayed clear of the books for now. I’ve been aware of them for years. I also know the tv show has taken liberties with the source material, so if I read the books it might detract from the world building of the show. I’ll get to it.
