Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
It wasn’t the first time Lalo Schifrin’s iconic theme was heard, but I wonder whether many of our readers first encountered the Impossible Missions Force, or IMF, in Brian De Palma’s 1996 film – the starting point to Alan’s recent trek through all of Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible films.
We also moved our March espresso podcast forward by a week so Alan could chat with Matt about this weekend’s 95th Academy Awards. Neither of them was entirely convinced by the majority of the nominees, but both found a lot to like about Todd Field’s TÁR, a great showcase not only for Cate Blanchett’s acting chops, and Charlotte Wells’ AFTERSUN.
Let’s finish the week with a trailer for a film that is highly unlikely to get much attention by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Matt: French writer-director Quentin Dupieux has made many a goofily surreal film, from Rubber, in which a psychic tire named Robert kills people with its mind, to Mandibles, where two simpleminded friends try to train a gigantic fly in order to make money with it. Smoking Causes Coughing, with its absurdist Francophone take on a bunch of Power Rangers-style superheroes, fits right in with the rest of them.
