Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.
For every action in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction – and for every attempt to rehabilitate Fedora, we get a counterpoint: in this case, Alan’s post expressing his issues with Billy Wilder’s late-career flop, drawing a direct line to his iconic Sunset Boulevard.
Talking of flops: it’s a shame that, however well-meaning it is and however big its budget was, Apple TV+’s Extrapolations is unlikely to change any minds and bring about any meaningful acting to counter climate change. But couldn’t it at least have been telling better stories?
From past flops to (we hope) future hits, starting with…
Mege: I am itching for more Scorsese, and so should you. The Irishman was good, Silence was fantastic, so here is a director who still works at the top of his game.
Matt: I enjoyed 2010’s Monsters, I liked the 2014 Godzilla better than most, and I think that Rogue One is one of the two best Star Wars movies since The Empire Strikes Back. I’m not entirely convinced by the snippets of dialogue we get in this teaser trailer for Gareth Edwards’ The Creator, but I love the grandeur of the images (I’m hoping I’ll catch the trailer on the big screen at some point) and this looks like it could be a sci-fi action film that is nonetheless about ideas. I’m curious to see the result.
