I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: Fuhgeddaboudit!

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

Remember when Johnny Depp and Al Pacino were still pretty good guarantees for a good film? Mege certainly did, and in last Friday’s Six Damn Fine Degrees post he took us back to 1997 and to Mike Newell’s Donnie Brasco.

Other than that, it’s been relatively quiet at your favourite culture-and-coffee place, but fret not: we have other trailers to regale you with.

Sam: Jessica Chastain is almost unrecognisable in this new biopic The Eyes of Tammy Faye on televangelist couple Tammy Faye and Jim Bakker (played by Andrew Garfield), who went on to become extraordinarily successful – including Tammy Faye’s singing career, before falling from grace with believers and influential mentors like Jerry Falwell, when Bakker became diagnosed with HIV. Jessica Chastain, who apparently purchased the rights to Tammy’s biography years ago, has placed this redemption story into the hands of Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) and acts and signs the part herself. It’s bound to be a rollercoaster through the candy-coloured world of televangelism and appears to bring out a new and breathtaking side of Chastain yet again. I certainly heard Oscar gold rain!

Matt: And to finish off for this week, here’s a fun slice of meta trailerage, for once for a video game. If you thought that all the trailer clichés – the sonorous voice, the bass brwaah!, the visual tropes – were a movie thing only, think again!
