I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: There’s no discharge in the war

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

This week, Alan’s series dedicated to the winners of the Academy Award for Best Picture continued, arriving at 1930 and All Quiet on the Western Front.

Meanwhile, Melanie introduced A Damn Fine Cup of Culture to the Chinese e-sports drama The King’s Avatar.

We also released our espresso podcast for May, in which Matt talked to David Fonjallaz of Cinema REX in Bern about the joys and challenges of programming for a repertory cinema. The REX is currently showing a series of films from the perspective of children, so here are trailers for two of the films they’re showing: Forbidden Games and The Florida Project.

But that’s not all we have for this week’s trailer grab bag!

Mege: My favourite Florence Pugh flick is still Lady Macbeth. I know that the Steinbeck novel is much wider in scope, but there is Florence Pugh again, trying to make her way through a rigid, coded society where women are arm candy, trophies and birth machines, without any say in any matter. Let‘s see how she can fend for herself in this one.

Matt: A new stop-motion film is always something to look forward to; a new stop-motion film by the artists at Laika doubly so. Wildwood looks exciting and dark, perhaps lacking some of the lighter touches of, say, The Boxtrolls and especially Missing Link, but then, Laika has shown that they can handle darker material with the likes of ParaNorman and Kubo and the Two Strings. And talking about other Laika films: checking the Wikipedia page for the studio, I’m just seeing that they are working on an adaptation of Susanna Clarke’s wonderful Piranesi – so that gives me at least two upcoming Laika films to look forward to!
