I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: The Box Office Number of the Beast

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

In his zigzagging journey through the Criterion Collection, Matt arrived at release #1319: Martin Ritt’s Hud, a bleak revisionist Western starring Paul Newman in one of his darkest parts. Well worth watching – but the film couldn’t be further from a certain other Western featuring Newman.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Sam took the Six Damn Fine Degrees into the recesses of his mind, to see films, or at least versions of films, that only seem to exist in his memory – such as a special, and very unique, version of The Man with the Golden Gun.

This week’s trailer post will be a relatively short one, but we have one more trailer for you.

Matt: The Beast, at least judging from this trailer, looks like a bad film – but it might still be a fun film. Samuel L. Jackson doesn’t save every film he’s in, but he has been known to make knowing trash enjoyable, and Joel Kinnaman can work tremendously well if he’s allowed to have fun with the material. And then there’s Renny Harlin, who’s never not made cheese – but I have had a very good time with some of the cheese he’s been responsible for. But then, I’m the guy who has surprisingly fond memories of 1999 shark actioner Deep Blue Sea (not to be confused with 2011’s The Deep Blue Sea by Terence Davies, which features nary a shark), so you may want to take what I say with a very large grain of salt.
