I’ll be in my trailer… watching trailers: Frankly, my dear

Join us every week for a trip into the weird and wonderful world of trailers. Whether it’s the first teaser for the latest instalment in your favourite franchise, an obscure preview for a strange indie darling, whether it’s good, bad, ugly or just plain weird – your favourite pop culture baristas are there to tell you what they think.

Not all of the films that Alan has written about in his chronology of Best Picture winners are much known these days – but it’s likely that every film fan has at least heard of the 1939 winner: Gone with the Wind.

Alan was also at the helm for this week’s Six Damn Fine Degrees, focusing on misremembered movies.

Alan was the red thread going through all of the posts this week, it seems, featuring (together with Matt) in this month’s espresso podcast on the current state of special effects and visual effects. Spoiler: This year’s Christopher Nolan release The Odyssey has some pretty good effects work!

And what else do we have for you this week?

Mege: When was the last time things were clear and orderly and a bright path led into the optimistic future? I can‘t remember. We have elected clowns who stare into the abyss with a grin, and the abyss giggles back madly. It‘s a madhouse out there, and Andrey Zvyagintsev‘s movie is a maze we are already lost in. His Leviathan (2014) offered no answers, only riddles.

Matt: Guy Ritchie? Isn’t that the guy who made all of those manic, funny gangster movies? You know, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, The Gentlemen, with a bit of Sherlock Holmes in between? Wife and Dog does not look like your typical Guy Ritchie film: the trailer doesn’t offer any particularly quotable lines (“Now, do you understand everything I’ve just said? ‘Cause if you don’t, I’ll kill ya!”). Instead, Wife and Dog looks dark, moody and grim. And potentially interesting.
